Women in Design + Construction | West End 2-unit Condominium Tour

  • 382 Danforth Street Portland, ME, 04102 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS
Rendering provided by Constance Bloomfield and Kaplan Thompson Architects

Rendering provided by Constance Bloomfield and Kaplan Thompson Architects

Join us to tour an unusual new 2-unit condominium on Danforth St. in the West End.

This is a collaborative project between Kaplan Thompson Architects and Constance Bloomfield, the Owner/Developer who is also an Architect.

The building successfully bridges the gap between contemporary design and the requirements of historic preservation.  Preliminary drawings were done by Constance and design development and construction drawings were done by Camila Atkins, of Kaplan Thompson. Catherine Callahan of Callahan + LeBleu, LLC is the landscape architect for the project.

As in all Kaplan Thompson projects, great care was taken in the design and execution of the exterior walls, to ensure that the building substantially exceeds state energy requirements.  The units have spectacular views of the Fore River and many other amenities for the future owners.

AIA Maine is pleased to partner with University of Maine at Augusta's Architecture Program to showcase the American Institute of Architects – Maine’s 2016 AIA Maine Biennial Design Awards. The exhibition is traveling throughout the state and is currently showcased at UMA's Water Street Gallery.

Featuring over 60 projects from Maine’s local architectural community, the exhibit celebrates the best of Maine’s architecture and showcases the various ways in which architects design buildings that respond to Maine’s natural and built landscape.

The compilation of projects is a result of AIA Maine’s 35-year old Design Awards program. The program solicits projects from member architects for a juried review by a group of nationally prominent peers from outside of the state of Maine. This year’s New Haven-based jury was selected for their individual accomplishments and collective understanding of Maine’s climate and geography. AIA Maine Tour + Social | Lincoln Academy Applied Technology and Engineering Center (ATEC) + Dormitory

Join us on Thursday, September 15th to socialize with fellow local architects and tour 44 Degrees North Architects' Applied Technology and Engineering Center (ATEC) and new Dormitory Building at Lincoln Academy.

The tour, conducted by Tor Glendinning, Principal Architect at 44 Degrees North Architects will take you through these recently completed buildings, which comprise the biggest changes to the Lincoln Academy campus footprint since the school’s founding in 1801.

ATEC
The ATEC at Lincoln Academy is a state of the art facility that offers its students a curriculum of integrated engineering sciences and shop technology in a hands-on atmosphere. The 10,300 square foot building is one-of-a-kind for the region. Tucked into the hillside, the building’s thermal exposure is reduced to add to its efficiency. This semi-earthen concept takes advantage of a hillside slope otherwise hard to use. It frees up valuable space, which allowed room for other campus components like the new dormitory and a new turf athletics field.

ATEC features a high-performance insulated envelope and a ground source geothermal heating and cooling system in this all-electric building complement each other in a new standard for efficiency.

Lincoln Academy Dormitory Building
The Lincoln Academy Dormitory building is the first freestanding building built on the campus of Lincoln Academy in 180 years. It is a 37,000 square foot cap project of a three phase international boarding program established in 2010. The building houses 54 male and female students in double and triple room occupancies. It headquarters the international program administration office on the first floor level, along with six family apartment residences for the dedicated support families for the student residents.

The tour will be followed by a social at the Newcastle Publick House.  www.newcastlepublickhouse.com/

Tour + Social at the Bangor Public Library

Image courtesy of Scott Simons Architects.

FREE (pre-registration appreciated)

Join us on November 12th to socialize with fellow local architects and tour Scott Simon Architects' newest renovation to the Bangor Public Library.

The Bangor Public Library, built in 1912 with a 1997 addition, is a much-loved resource for the City of Bangor and surrounding communities.   The two primary goals of the current renovation are 1) to align the library's services and spaces with today's library user and 2) to create better connectivity and transparency throughout the library.

The tour, conducted by Scott Simons of Scott Simons Architects, will review the current renovations as well as discuss the history of the building as it pertains to three generations of architects' work: the original 1912 building designed by Peabody and Stearns, the 1997 addition designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects, and the current design by Scott Simons Architects.

About AIA Maine Tour + Socials
