Bummed Out by the Housing Crisis? Let’s Talk Solutions Recap
AIA Maine brought members together on March 5, 2025, for a critical conversation on housing policy. The discussion focused on how AIA Maine could help address Maine’s housing crisis, and we sought feedback from members and practicing architects.
Elizabeth Frazier, policy advocate from Pierce Atwood, provided an overview of key legislative initiatives for the year and shared insights from Maine’s Housing Outlook, a recent report from MaineHousing. From affordability to zoning, she outlined the major state-level actions and their potential impact on architects and the built environment.
Jesse Thompson of Kaplan Thompson Architects explored real-world examples of design and regulatory challenges encountered in affordable housing projects across the state. He shared his experiences and encouraged participants to contribute their own, fostering a discussion on the pressing issues affecting architectural work and the direction policy should take.
