The AIA Maine Fellows Committee will be holding a workshop on Wednesday, May 5th from 1:00-2:00 PM to go through the Fellowship submission process. The workshop will be held virtually. Our goals are as follows: 

• To encourage qualified AIA Maine members to consider fellowship,

• provide support and guidance for interested candidates,

• share our experiences and help “demystify” the fellowship process,

• connect interested members to available resources,

• and provide a forum for discussion of the fellowship process.

It is the time of year to socialize and celebrate the collective achievements of AIA Maine members in 2019.

Every year we are thrilled at all the exciting accomplishments of our membership. From creating award-winning buildings to influencing public policy, our members are very busy. Our annual meeting is the perfect place to take stock and view all of the impactful change our membership has enacted over the past year. This year we are providing new ways to showcase your efforts.

Join us on June 26th to gain a deeper understanding of the energy use intensity (EUI) metric and to learn how to evaluate the energy performance of your designs.

About EUI
In an effort to codify a universal approach to performance measurement, the AIA has established “EUI” or “Energy Usage Intensity” as the unit of measure on which building energy performance is assessed.

Put simply, EUI is a measurement of the amount of energy a given building uses per unit of area. The AIA has adopted this metric for design awards evaluation and, moreover, it is the key criteria for reporting design progress in meeting the goals of the AIA 2030 Commitment, which established clear thresholds for EUI across a range of project types.

Course Description
If energy modeling is new to you or your office, you may ask, “how do I calculate EUI?” Or perhaps you are excited to learn about energy modeling but wonder how it influences the design process, or how buildings might need to change to meet the AIA 2030 Commitment.

The AIA Maine Committee on the Environment is pleased to offer this course, dedicated to answering your questions about Energy Usage Intensity. 

Maine leaders in sustainable design will discuss the use of energy modeling in their offices in a panel discussion, then we will roll up our sleeves with Vamshi Gooje
from Thornton Tomasetti, who will offer a tutorial on calculating EUI on any architectural project through the use of free, downloadable software.

About Vamshi Gooje, LEED AP BD+C, BEMP, CEM, Thornton Tomasetti
Vamshi Gooje of Thornton Tomasetti, advises clients on green building strategies and technologies. As head of the Building Analytics group within the Sustainability practice, he is responsible for developing new initiatives and strategic growth plans. Vamshi is experienced in providing energy analysis and sustainability consulting for a variety of projects ranging from renovations and expansions to new construction for commercial, residential and educational buildings and research facilities.

Energy Analysis Expertise
Vamshi is an expert in building science, which draws on physics, chemistry, engineering, architecture and the life sciences to create more comfortable, energy-efficient and high-performing buildings. He models whole-building energy, daylighting and thermal comfort to find optimal solutions to design challenges. He is knowledgeable in a range of energy simulation engines, including EnergyPlus, DOE 2.2 and Radiance, and stays up to date with the latest industry trends such as migration to advanced parametric modeling tools.

AIA Maine’s Women in Design + Construction and Emerging Professionals Committees are collaborating to present this exciting event.

Tour the Nature Conservancy in Maine.

Earn learning units while gathering with colleagues as you tour The Nature Conservancy in Maine’s new office building located in the historic Fort Andross Mill in Brunswick.

You will hear from the architectural team, led by Harry Hepburn of BRIBURN, the sustainability team, led by Heather Walters at Thornton Tomasetti, as well as leaders from the client team at The Nature Conservancy in Maine.

The team will discuss their collaborative efforts to create a space that supports staff well-being and productivity, models green and sustainable design, and inspires innovative and collaborative problem-solving.

This project included a complete interior renovation and fit-up of approximately 8,800 square feet of existing space and a new 600 square foot mezzanine.

The new space features natural and recycled elements that artfully reflect the client’s mission. The curving wood wall is made from yellow birch sustainably harvested from The Nature Conservancy in Maine’s own certified forest property in the St. John River valley. The carpet tiles underfoot, with a pattern reminiscent of crashing surf, are made from recycled fishing nets in a partnership that cleans beaches and the ocean of nylon waste. The countertop in the kitchen/lounge was crafted using historic log-drive lumber salvaged from the bottom of the Penobscot River—a place where The Nature Conservancy in Maine has played a significant role in a historic river restoration project.

This project is on target for LEED Gold certification, and to be the first office in northern New England, and the first non-profit space in the Eastern U.S., to meet the requirements for the WELL Building Standard™ certification.

In collaboration with AIA Maine, angela adams is happy to host a night of design, conversation and inspiration for our local residential and commercial design trade community.

Join us to tour an unusual new 2-unit condominium on Danforth St. in the West End.

This is a collaborative project between Kaplan Thompson Architects and Constance Bloomfield, the Owner/Developer who is also an Architect.

The building successfully bridges the gap between contemporary design and the requirements of historic preservation.  Preliminary drawings were done by Constance and design development and construction drawings were done by Camila Atkins, of Kaplan Thompson. Catherine Callahan of Callahan + LeBleu, LLC is the landscape architect for the project.

As in all Kaplan Thompson projects, great care was taken in the design and execution of the exterior walls, to ensure that the building substantially exceeds state energy requirements.  The units have spectacular views of the Fore River and many other amenities for the future owners.

New Illuminated Sculptures

Joe Hemes is an architect and artist who lives with his family in South Portland, Maine. As an artist, he focuses on the manipulation of light to create mystical experiences. His illuminated sculptures cast shadows and project a fabric of colored light. This most recent body of work was initiated during his 2016 Haystack Open Residency. With “Shelters,” Hemes’ intent is to whimsically reveal our universal need for inner sanctum, while illuminating our humanity.

AIA Maine is pleased to partner with University of Maine at Augusta's Architecture Program to showcase the American Institute of Architects – Maine’s 2016 AIA Maine Biennial Design Awards. The exhibition is traveling throughout the state and is currently showcased at UMA's Water Street Gallery.

A reception will be held on Friday, April 28 from 5-7pm and will be a part of Augusta Downtown Alliance’s Art Walk on the same evening.

Featuring over 60 projects from Maine’s local architectural community, the exhibit celebrates the best of Maine’s architecture and showcases the various ways in which architects design buildings that respond to Maine’s natural and built landscape.

The compilation of projects is a result of AIA Maine’s 35-year old Design Awards program. The program solicits projects from member architects for a juried review by a group of nationally prominent peers from outside of the state of Maine. This year’s New Haven-based jury was selected for their individual accomplishments and collective understanding of Maine’s climate and geography. The jury awarded 11 total projects and was impressed with the overall work presented
