Why Architects as Second Responders?
In times of crisis, communities rely on the dedication and expertise of first responders to swiftly aid those in need, but when the dust settles and people start the rebuilding process, architects and engineers can play an important role in getting people back to their lives.
When disasters strike, buildings and infrastructure are often compromised, leaving communities vulnerable. This is where architects and engineers can step in as second responders. By evaluating and assessing the safety of structures, your expertise can play a crucial role in determining whether it's safe for residents to return home, businesses to reopen, and communities to rebuild.
The recent floods in Vermont are an example of our New England community’s recent need to call in architect and engineer second responders.
AIA Safety Assessment Program: Training Architects as Second Responders
The AIA Safety Assessment Program (SAP) equips architects with the tools and training necessary to respond effectively in times of crisis. By participating in this training, you gain the knowledge to evaluate buildings, identify potential hazards, and provide valuable recommendations to emergency management teams. Your role as a second responder can aid communities in their journey toward rebuilding.
AIA Maine Will Support Our Members in Getting Trained.
In our effort to get more architects trained as second responders, AIA Maine will pay for the training for a limited number of members willing to participate in AIAU’s October 6-7th online SAP training.
We will reimburse the cost of training for a limited number of members. This training will allow you the opportunity to participate in an upcoming Cumberland County EMP one-day workshop to explore what-if scenarios for local disaster preparedness.
In addition to contributing to the well-being and resilience of our communities, this training provides 6.5 HSW credits.
