AIA Maine 2020 Design Awards
The AIA Maine Design Committee is excitedly planning our upcoming 2020 Design Awards program and celebration. This program is one of the most anticipated events that we put on as a chapter.

The AIA Maine Design Awards program recognizes outstanding architecture projects by our members.

These stunning projects, spanning a diverse spectrum of project sizes, types, locations, and clients, show the range of work by Maine architects.

Every year we adapt our awards program to reflect current best practices and the feedback of our membership. We are excited to announce a few innovations that we hope will lead to more opportunities to learn from our collective work as Maine architects.

Based on AIA National’s Framework for Design Excellence, we will be providing the opportunity to report your project’s sustainability measures and impact on its community in a simple, yet meaningful way. It is our hope that this year’s submission process will not only be an opportunity for you to showcase your past work but will be a learning opportunity to inform your future work.

Keep an eye out for our 2020 Call for Entry in the next few weeks. The submission website will open on January 2nd, 2020 with a submission deadline of March 6, 2020.

In the meantime, you can learn more about the AIA National's Framework for Design Excellence (formerly known as the Top Ten Tool Kit).

Join our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Task Force
AIA recently released guides for understanding and building equity in the architecture profession.

AIA Maine would like to build on this work by offering programs throughout 2020 that aim to help our members understand the business and professional case for ensuring that your firm meets the career development, professional environment, and cultural awareness expectations of current and future employees and clients.

To kick-off our efforts, we are asking for input from you.

We hope to bring a range of perspectives to the table. Please consider joining us if you are a firm leader, project manager, newly licensed, not-yet-licensed or a student.

If you are intersted in joining the conversation, we are asking for commitment to attend four lunch-time meetings in January 2020 to outline and plan what types of programs might be most beneficial to our membership.

AIA Maine members, allied members, sponsors, and other professionals in the design community with an interest in equity, diversity and inclusion are encouraged to join.

We ask that you prepare for these meetings by reviewing the AIA Guides for Equitable Practice in advance of the first meeting.

Do you have news you would like to share with our membership? AIA Maine includes brief news items from our members and sponsors. Awards, events and other newsworthy items should be sent in a brief announcement.

AIA Best Practices
(Member Login Required)

  • Best Practice: Negotiations. When it comes to negotiations, many design firms have a culture of avoiding confrontation. Shifting our perceptions, however, can help us change that: We can learn to define our interests; understand the other parties' interests; and, with good preparation techniques, conduct a mutually successful negotiation.

  • Best Practice: Clarifying owner project requirements. A well-written owners project requirement (OPR) is the key to creating unity of intention in a project.
Award Opportunities

AIA Awards: AIA celebrates the best buildings and spaces—and the people behind them—with some of the most prestigious awards in the built environment.
