Scott Simons Architects received the Honor Award at the AIA New Hampshire's Design Awards Ceremony
Scott Simons Architects received the Honor Award at the American Institute of Architects New Hampshire Chapter’s (AIA NH) 2015 Annual Excellence in Architecture Design Awards. The firm was recognized for their Anderson Hall Performing Arts Center Addition and Renovation at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH at the AIANH Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet on January 23rd in Amherst, NH.
Selected from 28 submissions, Scott Simons Architects’ Anderson Hall Performing Arts Center Addition and Renovation transformed the formerly dark, crowded, and inwardly looking church/auditorium into an open, joyful performance space on the southeast end of Brewster Academy’s campus. The project included removing the existing entrance, lobby, church pew seating, and stage, and the addition of 4,370 SF of new space that houses the new lobby, set shop, classroom, elevator, and stairs. The new entrance lobby is a 20-foot high light-filled space surrounded by windows with views to the campus. The 332-seat theater includes a thrust stage with wide wing spaces, wing lofts, catwalks and fly space, set shop/back stage area with direct access to a loading dock, greenroom/rehearsal room, costume shop, and dressing rooms.
The 2015 jury, comprised of faculty members of the Boston Architectural College, noted that the project is “a skillful architectural solution that while maintaining the existing character of the buildings creates a new composition through the re-purposing and program that strengthens the original building. The interior spaces are successfully transformed from inward looking to outward looking with open and light-filled performance spaces. The new entrance lobby connects the composition to the academy’s campus.”
