Accessibility in Multi-family Housing: Untangling the Confusion - Scoping

Hosted by: New England ADA Center, a project of IHCD

Two Different Webinars - May 18 on scoping, May 20 on design requirements

No cost

  • May 18 - 10 to 11:30 am

  • May 20 - `10 to 11:30 am

If you are confused about accessibility requirements in multi-family housing you are not alone. This topic is one of our must frequent inquiries.

Several laws apply to multi-family housing including the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, MUBEC (which adopted the International Building Code and ANSI A117.1), the federal Fair Housing Act, the Maine Human Rights Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act which applies when a project receives federal funds.

The May 18 session will address scoping requirements: under what circumstances accessibility is required in new construction and alterations, how many units need to be mobility accessible, how many need to be communication accessible for people who are deaf, how many need to comply with Type A and Type B.

The May 20 session will address the design requirements for mobility accessible units, Type A and Type B units and common use areas.
